Write an Original Poem
One great way to gain appreciation for poetry is to write one. Choose someone or something you love/care deeply about – whether a friend, a family member, or even a pet; maybe a sport/activity, your special place, your favorite food, even– and write a poem of any form you choose (free verse; rhyming verse; shaped; or any other).
o At least 17 lines
o Form of the poem is complementary to the subject
o Content – clear subject and story; speaker, tone, and message are clear and appropriate
o Use of figurative language – works contains alliteration, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, or other examples of figurative language.
o Presentation – Must be artistic -- decorate, use scrapbook paper, etc.
